THIS WEEK IN BASEBALL
Overview: a league of 6 teams, playing a 70 Game schedule using Avalon Hill's Pennant Race Baseball to resolve most regular season games. Games of the Week will be selected and played using Time Traveler Baseball.
The Regular Season will be followed by a Ladder Tournament to crown the League Champion.
The league will be seeded with historic players, but players will age and develop randomly. Fictional players will mix with historical seed rookies selected by the team owners as the League goes on.
Initial Teams and Draft
The initial rosters will be based on players from historical teams that finished with a losing record, i.e. no seed team can have a record of .500 or better.
In order to be carded and eligible for the League, historical players must have recorded at least 175 PA's or BF's.
A standard off season cycle (see below) will be conducted prior to the start of the initial season with two exceptions:
1. In Step 4, for this initial off season cycle, each team will choose one additional rookie player to go into the initial combined draft.
2. Prior to Step 5, a special group of Players will be added to the combined draft as needed to bring the total number of League position players to 100, the total number of League Starting Pitchers to 50 and the total number of League Relievers to 50. This special group of Players will be composed of two types of Players:
* Players that were not carded from the seed teams due to the PA/BF limits will be carded based on their qualifying rookie season.
* Fictional players will be developed from a common start at Age 18 to an even distribution of ages between 24 and 28.
Rosters
All rosters must consist of 14 position players, 6 starting pitchers and 6 relief pitchers.
Teams also have up to 5 players on an affiliated Minor League team. Players lose their Minor League roster eligibility when they turn 24 yo.
Players may be placed on the Disabled List if injured. If placed on the DL, players must remain on the DL for a minimum of one Regular Season cycle.
Players must be on the Major League roster or the Disabled List in the final cycle of the Regular Season to be eligible for the Post Season Tournament.
Regular Season
The Regular Season consists of 70 games / 82 League days. It will be played in 8 cycles of 7-12 League days per cycle. (The first and last cycles will be 7 League days, second and seventh cycles will be 10 League days, all other cycles will be 12 League days in duration.)
General Managers will set their lineups vs Left and Right handed Starting Pitchers, and will establish a Pitching Rotation.
For each Regular Season cycle of TWiB, game results will (by default*) be completed using Avalon Hill's Pennant Race Baseball game. *See TWiB Featured Games of the Week, below.)
The results will be posted with any important injury notices or exceptional performances.
General Managers will have a deadline to submit Roster moves consisting of waiving to or claiming from the unaffiliated minors list; promotions / demotions within the clubs minor league system; place or recall players to the disabled list and make trades.
GM's may also designate specific home games from the coming cycle that they will play using Time Travel Baseball as special "TWiB Featured Games of the Week". Any Games of the Week not completed by the submission deadline will be played using the Pennant Race game system. There will be hard deadline for Game of the Week submissions.
Post Season Tournament
A Ladder Tournament will be seeded based on regular season results. A special series of one game playoffs will be used as tie breakers as necessary to seed the Tournament.
In the Ladder format: Quarter Finals will feature 6 vs 5 and 4 vs 3. Semi-Finals will be the winner of 6/5 vs 1 and 4/3 vs 2. The Championship Series will conclude the Tournament.
Each series in the Post Season Tournament will be 7 games in a 2/3/2 format, with one travel day between sites and one travel day between successive rounds of the tournament.
GM's will have the option to play all of their home tournament games using Time Travel Baseball. Any tourney games not completed will be generated using Pennant Race.
The Championship Series will always be played entirely using Time Travel Baseball.
Off Season
Step 1. Teams will protect up to 4 players on their active roster. Teams that use only 1 protection will get a comp pick between rounds 2/3 and teams using 2 protections will get a comp pick between rounds 3/4.
Step 2. By random selection, 1 in 6 active roster players will become free agents and go into the combined draft pool, unless they were protected in Step 1.
Step 3. 24 Amateur fictional players between the age of 18 and 21 will be created.
Step 4. The teams losing the Quarter Finals and the team that loses the Championship, will each select one historic rookie seed player to be carded and placed in the draft pool. Rookie seed players must not be current players in the League. Seed rookies will be carded based on the first Major League Season in which they posted 175 PA/BF.
Step 5. A combined draft of Amateurs and Free Agents will be conducted, in reverse order of finish. Finish order based on the tournament finish, with tournament Wins as the first tie breaker, regular season record as the second tie breaker, dice off as the final tie breaker.
Step 6. Any player over the age of 27, that goes undrafted in the combined draft retires immediately. Undrafted players, 27 years or younger are placed in the unaffiliated Minors and may be claimed during the coming season.
Step 7. All players will go through the Age and Development Engine as the last step of the Off Season. The age model is built so that all new fictional players start as identical 18 yo's, develop to a peak (typically at Age 27) followed by a decline in the 30's with most fictional player's skills dropped to poor performance levels by 32-35 years old. Historical players will age and develop normally based on their age. Expect non-historic career development!
Time Travel Baseball Special Rules
A few special rules will be used with Time Travel:
* Players will have a split event card requiring the roll of 3 dice per PA instead of 2 dice.
* Balls in play Outs will be read off a standard Outs table, not the player cards. No additional dice roll is required.
* Pitchers have a varying Fatigue Factor that ranges from 3 (poor) to 7 (excellent).
Aging and Development Module Details
This module has been ported from SimbaseV2 to Time Traveler Baseball. All new players start uniformly poorly at Age 18 and are aged using this process. This module employs a random 1-13 selection. The hamete virtual dice server can roll "d13's" or a deck of cards can be used, with cards reading from Ace = 1 up to K = 13.
During the aging process, a d13 is rolled for each player, modified based on their current age as follows:
